In the great words of Leslie Knope – “Now it’s time for Jazz+Jazz=Jazz”
In the first of a weekly series we have LA jazz legend Charles Mingus. Citing Duke Ellington as one of his main influences, his compositions forged the way for so many new styles and incarnations of music over the years. He earned his nickname ‘The angry man of Jazz’ through his fearsome temperament and refusal to compromise any of his musical integrity – audiences just never knew what they were going to get. With stories of chasing band members across the stage with an axe and firing and rehiring whilst performing, nothing was certain with Charles Mingus. Blurring lines between composition and improvisation, ignoring all the forms and rules within standard Jazz music. One thing is for certain, you’ll enjoy the next 10 minutes… Take it away Charles.
