African Gems Vol. 4

There’s something special about the music that comes out of Africa, a wealth of artists, some who have crossed over into Western culture and many who remain undiscovered and unheard.

The fourth instalment of African Gems features legendary Congolese rhumba artist Tabu Ley Rochereau who came to prominence in the early 60’s with African Jazz. Rochereau crossed borders into Europe with his band Afrisa International bringing African music to international attention, with their choreographed female dancers and fanfare. He later married dancer Mbila Bel who he formed Africa’s principal vocal duo of the 80’s, recording seven albums together before retiring to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
