Now based in California, Smith spent her formative years on Orcas Island in the north west region of Washington State, a place she describes as “one of the most magical and peaceful places I have ever been. Over the last few years Kaitlyn has become renowned for her experimental, ambient synth music, composing mainly on the Buchla Music Easle modular synth.
On first listen ‘EARS’ seems to be her most accessible release to date, adding more live instrumentation and vocals around her compositions, relying less on the granular synthesis found on her first two albums. I
In a recent interview she described her preparation leading up to the album, “I am very intentional about the months leading up to when I am going to compose something new. I really trust the subconscious and try and feed it only information I want it to feed back to me. I make playlists that I listen to nonstop, or have images I look at daily, or I go to places I want to be inspired by.”
