Newly incarnated label Lagaffe Tales brings us their first piece of wax in the form Icelandic duo David & Hjalti – ‘RVK Moods’ – a cosmic journey through house and jazz.
It seems Iceland can do no wrong at the moment, it has been a huge summer for the island, and we’re slightly late to the party on this one. After stumbling across Lagaffe Tales a short time ago, they have solely been putting out digital releases and mixtape up to now. The Reykjavik based imprint has been bringing through local talent, and now bring us their first release on wax – and it’s worth the wait.
‘RVK Moods’ is a dusty, grooving record that wouldn’t sound out of place coming out of OYE Records in Berlin. The EP opens with fat hip hop drums, smooth synths and some well placed jazz cuts that echo the style of Moodymann or MF Doom.
The real sweetness is saved for the flip side however. ‘Whatever You Want’ is an absolute stormer whichever way you look at it, reminiscent of something along the lines of Theo Parrish. Substituting the faded jazz samples for a funky bass line and a few well timed bongo hits, it still somehow manages to capture the delicacy of the rest of the EP, all the while keeping your feet firmly stomping until the end.
Unsurprisingly this ones sold out at most places, however there is firm talk of a repress, and we’ll make sure to keep our ear close to the ground. Until then keep an eye here, and take a listen to a preview of the EP and ‘Whatever You Want’ below.
